Things to See and Do

- in and around Adaminaby & Lake Eucumbene

Kiandra Goldfields

Kiandra is an abandoned gold mining town and the birthplace of Australian skiing. In November, 1859, gold was discovered by mountain cattlemen, the Pollock brothers, and by March 1860, some 10,000 miners and storekeepers had raced to the scene it is estimated that the area at its peak accommodated around 15,000 people,

Significant numbers of Chinese people worked the Kiandra gold fields. Chinese miners built Three Mile Dam in 1882 to assist with sluicing operations at “New Chum Hill”. The scenic lake still exists and now supplies Selwyn Snowfields with its snow-making water requirements.

You can walk the Kiandra heritage trail. The walk is pleasant and easy and the plaques are detailed and informative. The trail stops at the locations of buildings and also passes water races, mullock heaps and other physical remains of the gold rush.

Yarrangobilly Limestone Caves and Thermal Pools

The Yarrangobilly Caves are set inside the deep gorges and rugged bluffs of the Yarrangobilly River Valley. Forming over thousands of years, this string of limestone caves features many stunning decorations, including delicate shawls, grand columns, underground pools, and awesome chambers. Yarrangobilly also has a natural thermal pool which is a constant 27c.

Guided and self guided tours are available daily, and special torchlight tours can be arranged by request.

High Country Huts

Kosciuszko National Park contains many huts that were built by stockmen, miners, fishermen, skiers, the Snowy Mountains Authority and others. The huts provide interesting destinations for bushwalking or ski trips, as well as refuge in bad weather.

Remains of Old Adaminaby

Some 50 years ago the town of Old Adaminaby was flooded to make way for the Snowy Mountains hydro-electric scheme. Only a third of the town’s 700 residents elected to move to the new town built some 9km away, with the rest moving away from the district.

When the water levels in Lake Eucumbene are low, areas of Old Adaminaby emerge.

Cabramurra

Cabramurra is the highest permanently inhabited town in Australia, situated at 1,488m above sea level. Cabramurra was established in 1954 using prefabricated houses, as part of the Scheme. An earlier surveying camp had been established there in 1951

Trout Fishing

Adaminabyis surrounded by trout waters. Lake Eucumbene (year round fishing) is 7 minutes to the south. The Murrumbidgee River is the same distance to the north and east. The Eucumbene River and many other rivers and streams are to the west.

Horse Riding

Trek to the Kosciusko National Park during the peak time of the beautiful wildflower season. Take in the breathtaking views, majestic high plains, historic huts and wild brumbies of the area.
